Belukha Mountain located in the Katun Range. It is the highest peak of the Altai mountains. It is part of the World Heritage Site entitled Golden Mountains of Altai. Belukha is a twin-peaked mountain massif that rises along the border of Russia and Kazakhstan. There are several small glaciers on the mountain. Of the two peaks, the eastern peak (4,506 m) is higher than the western peak (4,440 m). Since olden times the tribes settled in Altai treated Belukha with respect and awe. First written mention of Belukha belongs to 1793; the first traveller who saw Belukha was European traveller Gebler. The first scientist who used to research Belukha thoroughly since 1835 was Russian professor V.V.Sapognikov. He tried to climb Belukha for the first time. Nevertheless it was the Tronov brothers who first climbed Belukha in 1914. In the beginning of 20-th century traveller's interest of Belukha rose steeply. Russian and foreign tourists tried to climb up the mountain. In 1935 The First all-Siberian mountinery competition took place. During the competition 43 travellers climbed up Belukha. By the way most ascents of the eastern peak follow the same southern route as that taken in the first ascent.
